Whilst having a professional outlook on the field, off the field we are widely known for our social side. We have many large social events throughout the year which are detailed below:
Fresher’s Welcome: The first social of the year is a great chance for the freshers to meet the current club members. It usually takes place within the first week of the term and it involves a few casual pints and some food. It is definitely worth coming to if you are interested in finding out more about the club!
Fresher’s tour: This is highlight in the GURFC social calendar and it involves the whole club leaving on Friday afternoon to an unknown destination and returning again on Sunday evening. We head out both nights and the fresher’s play a fixture on the Saturday against a local university/club side. Every fresher is allocated a ‘father’ to look after them for the weekend and this is a great way for the new boys to get to know everyone in the club a bit better.
Christmas Dinner and Pub Golf: This usually takes place a week or so before the end of the first semester and exams start. The night starts off fairly civilized in the form of a three course meal before everyone is split into groups and led around the west end for pub golf.
GUSA Ball: This black tie event is usually held in the first weeks of February and is set up entirely by GUSA for all the sports clubs associated with the University. Like all clubs, we only have a certain amount of tickets allocated and so those that sign up first get a space.
Old Boys Match: This is when those that have recently left the club come back and play a fixture against the current 4th years. Although this event has not been held in a while, the date for this years Old Boys Match is Saturday 22nd March.
Rugby Ball: Held in the second semester this is when all members of the GURFC are able to bring a plus one along to a black tie event. There is a three course meal followed by speeches and awards and then some dancing. This year the Rugby Ball will take place on Saturday 22nd March.
AGM: Our Annual General Meeting is an extremely important date for the club as this is when all the committee positions for the following year are decided. The night therefore starts off very serious as the club decides who will hold what position the following year. After all the voting is done the night livens up and is one not to be missed! The AGM will take place on Wednesday 26th March. More information will be available shortly.
Club Dinner: This is usually the last social in the year and it involves a three course meal followed by several speeches and club awards. All those that are leaving the club say also say a few words and blues ties are also handed out on this night. This year the Club Dinner is set to take place on Thursday 22nd May.
Along with our large social events we also hold more casual events every week. After every home game we offer match teas at the GUU and most Wednesdays we will head to the beer bar for some drinking games before heading to Viper.
The club welcomes social members and it is great way of getting to know like-minded people as you embark on your university career.
