Match Report – 1st XV vs. Strathclyde 1st XV (8-10-14)
1st XV 10 – 18 Strathclyde University 1st XV
Glasgow started promisingly, taking the game to Strathclyde and earning a few early penalties but could not convert the early territory into points. Strathclyde then scored a penalty and try in quick succession to lead 10-0 after 20 min. Glasgow began to build the phases again and had a good scoring opportunity down the wing when Strathclyde’s fullback dived for the ball to prevent the pass going to hand. He received a yellow card for his efforts and Glasgow went straight on the offensive. With a well executed move from the set piece, Sam Bullock made a strong run and a few passes later John Rae crossed the line to make it 10-5. Early in the second half Glasgow built the phases well, threw the ball wide and Ross Mulford cut back inside to score. Strathclyde then scored a good try in the corner to make it 15-10. Glasgow went right back at Strathclyde and spent a prolonged period in the 22, with numerous penalties and scrums, and eventually being held up over the line. This was a key turning point as we did not capitalise on our opportunities. With the Strathclyde captain sent off for a punch with 15 minutes to, Glasgow could not make the most of the man advantage and with a late penalty from Strathclyde the score ended 18-10. A very physical game that hung in the balance for the full 80 minutes. The boys will be eagerly anticipating the next encounter with our local rivals on the 12th of November.
