Glasgow 2nd XV through to final after narrow victory over Abertay 1st XV
March 11th, 2014
Last Wednesday’s Scottish Cup Semi-final against Abertay 1st XV
Glasgow University RFC 2nd XV 3 – 0 Abertay 1st XV
For the second week running Glasgow’s 2nd XV were faced with the challenge of defeating a team two leagues above them to progress in the Scottish Cup. While the final score certainly doesn’t suggest a points fest, this does not do justice to the quality of the game and the open rugb…y that Glasgow in particular played at times. The full 80 minutes was played at a high intensity and both teams defended exceptionally well and with enormous ferocity. Glasgow, playing into the wind in the first half, found themselves camped in their own 22 for much of the opening exchanges and struggled to put together any meaningful phases of play. However, their defence remained aggressive and this meant though they didn’t have the ball, they never looked like going into half-time behind. The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 after 40 minutes. Bolstered by a very strong bench, the home side began to attack more with half an hour to go and good breaks from centre Matthew Knaggs and replacement prop Archie Winnington-Ingram almost resulted in five-pointers. Unfortunately a lack of composure meant good opportunities were spurned. The score remained 0-0 until the last five minutes when Glasgow were awarded a penalty 30metres out and scrum-half Sam Bullock held his nerve to slot what would be the winning kick. A fantastic effort from the entire squad, especially considering the teams that were beaten to reach the final. The final will be played in Dundee in two weeks time. More specific match details and timings will be announced closer to the date.
