2nd XV Match Report- Wednesday 07/10/2015 vs Edinburgh 3rd XV (h)
The 2nd XV suffered a heavy defeat in their opening game of the season at Garscube. Glasgow started slowly as Edinburgh turned over the ball on halfway and sent their winger on a 40 metres run to the corner. An immediate response was required and this came through a kick to the corner and driving maul. Steven Moyes was on hand to touch down and Matty McConnell converted from out wide to give the home side the lead.
About 20 minutes had been played when Edinburgh’s no.12 broke through multiple tackles and scored under the posts. This effort was converted and followed shortly afterwards by another unconverted five points. The GURFC rallied and camped out in the Edinburgh 22 for the last ten minutes of the first half. Four successive attacking line-outs resulted in no points and a penalty attempt at goal was missed to leave the half-time score at 17-7.
Shortly after the break, a quick tap from Matt Lehmann and soft hands from Moyes put McConnell into the corner. As was the nature of the game, Edinburgh responded with a quickfire converted try and penalty to leave the score at 27-12 and the game firmly in their control.
However, minutes later, Michael Finlayson took advantage of a dropped ball and chipped through to touch down. Angus Blair added the extras and gave Glasgow a glimmer of hope at 27-19.
Unfortunately, the challenge soon fizzed out as strong running from the midfield and numerous missed tackles allowed Edinburgh to cross the whitewash several more times before the final whistle.
Missed tackles were ultimately costly on the day and defence is the pressing area to improve on ahead of next week. Stand out performances from Dylan Simmons (first cap), Angus Blair and Angus Lindsay.
Final Score: GURFC 2nd XV 19-46 Edinburgh 3rd XV
